GPS Based Oscillation Monitoring System to helps identify bad running locations to ensure the safety of trains, as well as the riding comfort of passengers. The ride quality of the track is monitored periodically through the oscillation monitoring system.

In a conventional oscillation monitoring system, the operator must look through the window and punch on completion of every kilometer, so that the locations of bad running sites are marked for remedial.

Action Further, after completing the run, the operator must manually analyse and identify the bad locations where he felt more jerk or heard abnormal sounds.

 These results give only an approximate location of bad patches and depend heavily on the skill of the operator in punching the completion of each km precisely at the point identified, to mark where track parameters are poor and
need improvements.

The Railway Board decided to introduce a GPS -based oscillation monitoring system on the Western Railway, a first of its kind for the Indian Railways, where vertical and horizontal acceleration beyond the threshold values is identified and communicated to the concerned track maintainers via SMS and required reports.
